Description
Perfectionism Is Not a Value, It's a Fear: A Growth Mindset for the Woman Tired of Starting Over
Did you grow up hearing, "If you can't do it right, don't do it at all"? I did, and it followed me for years. In this episode, we take that sentence apart and look at what a growth mindset offers the woman who keeps starting over.
How do I overcome perfectionism?
Start by seeing it for what it is. Perfectionism is not a value. It's a fear. It tells you that if you can't do something all the way right, it doesn't count. A growth mindset says you're not finished, and that's okay. You learn, you adjust, and you take the next step.
What is the difference between perfectionism and mastery?
Mastery keeps practicing and keeps getting better. Perfectionism won't let you begin until you're already there. Mastery is on the list of value words I use with coaching clients. Perfect is not.
Why do I keep quitting and starting over?
All-or-nothing thinking. You miss one day, decide you blew it, and wait for Monday. A missed day is information. It tells you something about your week, your energy, and your plan.
What does the Bible say about perfectionism?
God never asked us for perfect. "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9). And He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion (Philippians 1:6).
Breathe, Pray, Move
- Breathe: let go of the all-or-nothing. One missed day does not erase the days you showed up.
- Pray: ask Him for today's step and the grace to take it.
- Move: give the thing you've been putting off ten imperfect minutes.
Top 3 takeaways
- Perfectionism and mastery are different. Mastery keeps practicing. Perfectionism won't let you start.
- A missed day is information. Learn from it, adjust, and take the next step.
- God's power is made perfect in our weakness. He finishes what He starts.
