MID WEEK MOTIVATION - October 7, 2026 "How DeSoto Hills Found Land To Grow" (Ben Smith)

Published 2 days, 21 hours ago
Description

A church doesn’t become what it is by accident. It becomes what it is because real people make hard calls, give sacrificially, and keep showing up when the “next step” feels bigger than the budget and bigger than the map.

We sit down with Ben Smith to tell the origin story behind DeSoto Hills Baptist Church in Southaven, Mississippi, starting back when the church was Carriage Hills Baptist Church and members were literally meeting in a house. Ben paints a picture of those early days, right down to the classic “Tennessee floor plan” where a pastor preached from the foyer so the living room, dining room, and den could all be part of worship. It’s funny, but it’s also a powerful reminder that the mission doesn’t wait for perfect facilities.

Then the conversation shifts to the nuts and bolts of church growth and church relocation. Ben pulls out plats, deeds, and aerial photos to show how the Carriage Hills campus was assembled from multiple subdivision lots, why the church eventually got boxed in by surrounding houses, and how outside consultants advised against expanding in place. As a civil engineer with firsthand insight into local development, he explains how the church found and purchased 15 acres on Getwell Road in 1998, back when the area was still farmland.

Along the way, we talk about stewardship, vision, and the kind of generosity that quietly changes everything, from paying off land to paving a parking lot and funding key projects. If you care about church history, building decisions, or how a congregation plans for the future without losing its heart, you’ll get a lot from this story.
