Why ASEAN Still Can’t Clear the Haze
Published 2 weeks, 5 days ago
Description
More than two decades after ASEAN adopted its transboundary haze agreement, fires in Indonesia are once again affecting air quality across the region, with Sarawak particularly badly hit. Malaysia is pushing for stronger regional coordination, while attention is also turning to the responsibility of companies linked to plantation fires across borders. We examine whether ASEAN’s existing approach has reached its limits, how corporate accountability could be strengthened, and what it would take to stop haze from becoming a recurring regional crisis.
