Drone swarms are defense's defining threat not because drones are new, but because they attack the structure of modern defense. The cost math is already broken — $20K–$50K drones against $1M–$4M interceptors, with over 1,000 Patriots spent in ten days of the 2026 Gulf conflict — but the deeper problem hits earlier in the kill chain: dense swarms overwhelm target tracking, RF-silent (fiber-optic, vision-guided) drones defeat the cheapest detection and jamming layers, and no human can triage hundreds of tracks in the seconds available. Offensively, swarms are professionalizing fast (decentralized control, inter-agent coordination, full autonomy — each engineered to beat a specific countermeasure), and they've already left the battlefield: ~144 gray-zone incursions over Europe, airport shutdowns costing millions against drones costing nothing. A swarm doesn't need to destroy anything to succeed. The winners won't be whoever builds the best interceptor — they'll be whoever solves the tracking-and-decision layer first, because that's where the swarm actually wins.
