🥊 Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Keith “One Time” Thurman is getting closer — but is this really the fight Ortiz needs?
Oscar De La Hoya says Golden Boy is finalizing negotiations for Ortiz to face the former unified welterweight champion on the December 12 David Benavidez card in Arizona. Ortiz enters at 24-0 with 22 KOs and hasn’t fought since destroying Erickson Lubin in two rounds in November 2025. Thurman, 31-2 with 23 KOs, is coming off a stoppage loss to Sebastian Fundora.
There’s name recognition. There’s history. And there could definitely be fireworks.
But after Ortiz spent a year on the sidelines while Jaron “Boots” Ennis collected belts at 154, should Golden Boy be giving Vergil a recognizable veteran — or throwing him directly into the championship mix?
We break down the matchmaking, business, risk, reward, and keys to victory.
