Episode 184: Connect Before Correct For Calmer Parenting

Season 5 Episode 184 Published 1 week, 3 days ago
Description

"Send me a Text Message!"

Punishment can feel like the fastest way to stop a problem, but what if it’s also the fastest way to shut down trust? I sit down with Dr. Cheryl Wilson, an educator and former principal with decades of experience and a certified positive discipline parent educator, to unpack what really happens when we use control, threats, or harsh consequences to manage kids’ behavior, and what to do instead when we want lasting change.

We get honest about the discipline many of us grew up with, including how easy it is to repeat old patterns when we’re stressed, tired, or triggered. Dr. Wilson explains why punishment may “work” in the moment but often leaves the underlying need untouched, and how that can lead to withdrawal, resentment, or kids simply getting better at hiding things. From a positive discipline lens, misbehavior is communication, and our job is to look past the surface behavior to the unmet need: belonging, significance, safety, attention, or capability.

You’ll hear practical, step-by-step strategies you can use right away, including “connect before correct,” calming your nervous system before you address the issue, and shifting from attacking the person to solving the problem. We also talk through real-life scripts for setting boundaries without yelling, plus the 777 connection routine: seven minutes in the morning, seven minutes after school or work, and seven minutes before bed to help kids feel seen and secure. Dr. Wilson also shares why storytelling and cultural identity matter, especially for African-American families raising children in today’s K-12 public education system.

Listen, share this with a parent who needs a reset, and subscribe so you don’t miss new Tuesday episodes. After you listen, leave a review and tell me: where could “connection before correction” change the tone in your home?
