Dan Hummel takes Julian through the story of the Dead Sea Scrolls, starting with their discovery in 1947 and the Bedouin shepherds who first found and sold them, largely by accident, into what would become one of the biggest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. Hummel explains why the scrolls turned into such a massive bombshell once their significance became clear, and walks through the more complicated chapter that followed: growing criticism from archaeologists toward Israel's handling and control of the scrolls throughout the 1960s and '70s.

Along the way, Hummel gives Julian a quick, accessible rundown of how modern Christianity and Judaism actually relate to and diverge from each other, and breaks down what Old Testament texts were actually found among the scrolls. The conversation closes on a bigger theme running through the whole discussion: the complicated mix of closeness and animosity that has historically existed between Christians and Jewish people.
