October 5, 2026 - 1 Samuel 2 & Proverbs 17:5-8

Published 2 weeks, 6 days ago
Description

Today's reading covers 1 Samuel 2 and Proverbs 17:5–8. The reflection opens with Hannah's prayer of praise after God answers her years of barrenness, lifting up the Lord's sovereignty and his care for the faithful. The chapter then turns sharply to Eli's sons, whose abuse of their priestly position, greed, and outright wickedness go uncorrected by their father and set up their family line for judgment, while God promises to raise up a faithful priest in their place, pointing ahead to Samuel's role in ushering in the era of Israel's kings.

Proverbs 17:5–8 continues with a run of short sayings on life, speech, and integrity. Mocking the poor is treated as an insult to their Maker; grandchildren are a crown to the aged, just as godly parents are an honor to their children; and fine speech is out of place in a fool, just as false speech is out of place in a prince. The passage closes with an ironic take on bribery, describing how the one who gives a bribe can feel like they hold some magic charm for success, when in truth they're living in a kind of self-deceiving illusion rather than the honest path of real integrity.
