Episode Details

Was Jesus in the Old Testament centuries before His birth in Bethlehem? The Hebrew Bible describes a mysterious figure called the Angel of the Lord who speaks as God, carries the name of God, receives worship, forgives sin, appears in human form, and is sometimes directly identified as the Lord. In Episode 1 of The Revealed One, we investigate the biblical case for the pre-incarnate Christ, the appearances theologians call Christophanies. We follow the evidence through Hagar, Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Joshua, Gideon, Manoah, Samuel, Daniel, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and the prophets. Why does Jacob say he wrestled with God? Who spoke to Moses from the burning bush? Who was the commander of the Lord's armies who accepted Joshua's worship? Why does Genesis describe the Lord on earth calling down fire from the Lord in heaven? Who is the mysterious Son of Man riding the clouds in Daniel 7? And why did the high priest accuse Jesus of blasphemy when Jesus combined Daniel 7 with Psalm 110 at His trial? We also examine: • The Angel of the Lord • Christophanies and theophanies • The Word of the Lord in the Hebrew Bible • The Memra in the Aramaic Targums • The Logos and Philo of Alexandria • Daniel 7 and the Son of Man • Michael Heiser's discussion of the two Yahweh figures • The ancient Jewish debate over Two Powers in Heaven • Rabbi Akiva and the second throne • Early Christian interpretations of these passages • Why Mark 14 is one of the strongest divine claims Jesus makes in the Gospels The question isn't simply whether Christians later decided Jesus was divine. The deeper question is whether the Hebrew Bible had already prepared its readers for a visible divine figure who was distinct from God Most High and yet identified with God Himself. This is The Revealed One: Episode 1.
