Bryan Kohberger And The Initial Forensic Tests At His Apartment In Washington

Published 7 hours ago
Description
The initial forensic testing conducted at Bryan Kohberger’s apartment in Pullman, Washington, produced a limited number of presumptive positive results for blood. Investigators from the Idaho State Police Forensic Services Laboratory examined 51 locations or items in the apartment after Kohberger’s December 30, 2022 arrest. Four tested presumptively positive for blood, including staining associated with bedding, while the overwhelming majority of the tested areas were negative. Early records released in 2023 specifically showed presumptive blood-positive results on a mattress cover and an uncased pillow, which initially drew attention because investigators were searching for biological material that might connect Kohberger to the four University of Idaho victims.

The more important finding came from the subsequent DNA analysis: none of the blood recovered from Kohberger’s apartment was linked to Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle or Ethan Chapin. Later defense expert materials disclosed that all four presumptive-positive blood samples were consistent with Kohberger’s own known DNA profile. Investigators also examined hairs recovered through vacuum filtration and compared them with samples from the victims and the surviving dog, but those comparisons were negative as well. In other words, the initial testing produced several potentially interesting stains, but the follow-up forensic work did not establish that victim blood or hair had been carried back to Kohberger’s Washington apartment after the murders.
