Iraq has issued a new clarification about the possibility of removing zeros from the Iraqi dinar-and the wording matters. The issue remains in an initial discussion and evaluation phase, with no decision or implementation date announced. The government source also explained that, in principle, removing zeros would mean expressing monetary values in a new unit while converting prices, salaries, savings and obligations at the same rate. In other words, the redenomination itself would not automatically reduce the real value of citizens' money. The Central Bank of Iraq has separately denied reports that it had already printed new Iraqi currency with zeros removed. It said that any future project involving restructuring denominations or removing zeros would require legal, regulatory and technical stages and would be announced through official channels if approved.
