The last stretch to safety is where a lot of people die, because your guard drops right when the road decides to collect what you owe. Jack is rolling north toward Leesburg with Rachel, Lily, and Mr. Rogers in the cab, following Stephen’s radio breadcrumbs past the big airport and toward a smaller airfield with a gate that might mean sanctuary. For a moment, it almost feels possible. Then the traffic ahead stops looking abandoned and starts looking arranged.
