October 3, 2026 - 1 Samuel 1 & Proverbs 17:1-4

Published 3 weeks, 1 day ago
Description

Today's reading covers 1 Samuel 1 and Proverbs 17:1–4, opening a new book. Our reflection follows Hannah's barrenness and the pain of her rival Peninnah's provocation, her anguished prayer and vow at Shiloh, and Eli's blessing over her. Hannah's conception and the birth of Samuel follow, along with her devotion in dedicating him to the Lord's service, setting up Samuel's role as Israel's last judge and a transitional figure into the era of the kings.

Proverbs 17:1–4 opens the chapter with wisdom about peace in the home and in service. A quiet, humble meal is weighed as better than a feast surrounded by strife, and a servant who acts wisely is pictured as rising above a shameful son, even sharing in the family inheritance. The Lord is described as testing hearts the way fire refines silver and gold, and the chapter closes with a warning about the kind of person who listens to wicked and deceitful speech.
