What does the Bible say about greed? In this episode of Testing the Spirits, Bennett Tanton and Laura Baker examine greed, generosity, money, possessions, covetousness, and the condition of the heart. Greed does not always look like greed. Sometimes it looks like ambition. Success. Security. Ministry growth. Influence. A bigger house. More money. More followers. More control. The question isn't simply what do you have? The question is: What has you? Bennett and Laura examine the biblical warnings about greed and ask what separates healthy prosperity from covetousness and idolatry. They discuss Jesus' warning in Luke 12, the rich fool, sowing and reaping, tithing, generosity, hoarding, trusting God for provision, giving with the right motive, greed inside ministry, and the danger of allowing possessions or financial security to replace trust in God. Pasted text Laura also shares her personal testimony of recognizing greed in her own life, repenting, intentionally learning generosity, and changing the way she viewed money and possessions. Pasted text Near the end of the episode, Laura leads a prayer of renunciation against the spirit of greed, asking God for forgiveness, breaking agreement with greed, and praying for generosity and the filling of the Holy Spirit. The heart of this conversation may be summed up in one question: Do you own your possessions, or do your possessions own you? And maybe the answer to greed isn't simply learning to want less. Maybe it's learning to want God more.
