I've been a park ranger for twelve years. I've seen bears, wolves, mountain lions—the kind of things that make tourists run back to their cars. Antlers branch from its skull like the roots of a dead tree, twisted and sharp. It doesn't move when I shine my flashlight at it. It doesn't flinch.
