Episode Details

Tim Thomas came on to preview Ole Miss basketball and ended up making a campaign speech. Elston Turner is not in the rafters at the Pavilion, and Thomas called that a travesty. Here is the file: All-Century Team, 4th in school history in scoring at 1,805 points, 2nd in rebounding at 828, and 22 points in the 66-62 SEC Tournament title win over Georgia that sent Ole Miss to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. He then played eight NBA seasons and is an assistant coach with the Minnesota Timberwolves right now. No banner.

8 days to Vanderbilt. Basketball opens with an exhibition against Alabama on Oct 15.

Steven Willis and Ole Miss legend Tim Thomas go through Chris Beard's rebuilt roster, the Maui Invitational, and the end of the Tad Pad — plus the one correction the 1981 story has needed for forty-five years.

📌 THREE THINGS

1. Elston Turner's case is stronger than the complaint. 1,805 career points is 4th all-time here; 828 rebounds is 2nd. He is on the All-Century Team. He scored 22 in the 1981 SEC championship, a 66-62 win over Georgia that produced the first NCAA Tournament bid in Ole Miss history. He is currently an NBA assistant with Minnesota. Thomas has written letters and named who he wrote to.

2. One correction to a forty-five-year-old story. Turner did NOT shut Dominique Wilkins down in that final — Wilkins scored 28 and was named tournament MVP in a losing effort. What's true is better: Bob Weltlich told Turner at halftime that when he was ready to play like he had for four years, to let him know. Turner was 4-of-11 in the first half and scored 11 after it.

3. No walk-ons. Fifteen scholarship players, every one there to play. Micah Handlogten (7-1, Florida), Santiago Trouet (6-11, Arizona State), Roman Siulepa (6-7, Pitt), Adam "Budd" Clark (Seton Hall), Ben Henshall (Perth) and Corey Stephenson (18 ppg at FIU). Thomas's read: best rebounding team Beard has had here, after a 15-win season.
