The Police Chase That Never Ends
Published 2 weeks, 4 days ago
Description
A 14-year-old in a stolen Land Cruiser circles a tree. Then another tree. And another. For a full hour, police follow a teenager doing donuts around trunks in the Australian outback, in what viewers called "the world's funniest police chase." But for residents of Kununurra, it wasn't funny at all—it was a symptom of a deeper crisis.
In Denver, a suspect leads police around a residential complex in perfect circles, the chase looping endlessly with no resolution in sight. And in Los Angeles, 95 million people watched a white Ford Bronco crawl down the freeway for nearly two hours—a chase that wasn't about speed, but about a man who had nothing left to lose and a nation that couldn't look away.
This is the phenomenon of the "endless chase"—pursuits that defy the logic of crime and punishment, where the only thing more terrifying than the chase is the possibility that it might never truly end.
