October 2 | Remember Who Holds the Authority
Description
Today’s reading from Isaiah 14–16 and Ephesians 5:1–16 invites us to consider how God forms His people to live differently in a world where pride, darkness, and misplaced power can seem overwhelming. Both passages call us to remember who God is and allow that awareness to shape our identity and our walk over time.
In Isaiah, Babylon represents power that has become proud, oppressive, and convinced of its own permanence. Yet God reminds His people that no ruler or nation exists outside His authority. His judgment of Babylon calls His people away from fear and toward a steady identity rooted in His sovereignty rather than the apparent strength of their enemies.
In Ephesians, Paul calls believers to walk in love and to live as children of light rather than returning to the patterns of darkness that once shaped them. Their calling involves growing aware of what pleases God and letting that awareness reshape their responses, relationships, and everyday lives.
Together, these passages invite us to reflect on what has been given too much power in our minds and hearts. They remind us that formation includes learning to see power, darkness, and uncertainty through the reality of God’s authority while allowing His character to shape the way we live.
