Laid off in 2023 and diagnosed with multiple sclerosis months later, Ed Smits lost sight in his right eye and use of his right side. Instead of giving up, he built The Turf Therapist, a science-based lawn care business in Commerce Township, Michigan. Ed shares how a homemade PVC lawn striper, hundreds of door hangers and a used zero turn that blew its engine a month in grew into about 20 lawn clients. We dig into selling soil tests, liquid vs. granular fertilizer, and aeration vs. dethatching and how to price each. Ed also explains why repowering his Exmark Lazer Z for $3,700 beat buying a $17K mower. Plus his advice for new lawn care operators: specialize before you expand.
