Back to EpisodesKeep Your Medicaid: Check 2027 Work-Rule Exemptions and Proof
Description
Will you have to work or volunteer to keep Medicaid in 2027—or are you exempt? Before you act on a headline, find out which rules actually apply to you.
In Part 4 of our free course, I’ll explain the new federal Medicaid work requirements under the One Big Beautiful Bill, including exemptions and practical steps for responding to your state.
I’m Dr. Ed Weir, former Social Security District Manager and Medicaid specialist. We’ll cover:
✅ Which Medicaid adults the new requirement affects
✅ Exemptions and how to document them
✅ Work, volunteering, and qualifying education
✅ What to record and keep
✅ What to do when a notice seems wrong
This requirement targets certain adults ages 19–64 without Medicare. People with Medicare and adults 65 or older are outside its applicable population. Other Medicaid eligibility and renewal rules still apply.
State implementation details vary, so follow your state’s current instructions and respond promptly to notices.
