Reports described a cockpit struggle, a sharp descent and overspeed, and apparent damage to the aircraft’s rudder. I separate those initial claims from what had not been independently established, including the suspected first officer’s motive and whether the incident involved terrorism or a suicide attempt.

I also trace the information battle that followed. An early claim that a Ukrainian pilot stabbed a Russian captain spread through Russian media, then was retracted; later reporting said Russian and Ukrainian pilots may have been off-duty passengers who helped regain control. The passengers ultimately continued to Ben Gurion on a rescue flight. This episode shows why corrections rarely travel as far or as fast as the first sensational allegation.
