FIELD NOTE #052 | The Escalation Was a Request for Permission
Description
An escalation is a question with a destination.
Sometimes the destination is expertise.
Sometimes it is ownership.
- The context is ready.
- The options are ready.
- The decision may be ready too.
What is missing may simply be someone willing to put their name behind it.
That is Accountability Transfer:
the movement of decision ownership upward, disguised as a request for senior input.
Not every escalation belongs here.
Some genuinely require authority.
Some require expertise.
Some require context that exists higher in the organisation.
The interesting part is knowing which kind has just arrived.
---
Because a business depends on repeatability.
And repeatability depends, in part, on decisions being made at the right level.
When ownership keeps travelling upward while context stays below, the organisation can become very good at escalation.
And rather less good at deciding.
---
This episode explores the distinction — and the two questions that make it visible:
~ What decision would you make if I weren't in the room?
~ What do you need from me that you cannot provide for yourself?
Sometimes the answer really does belong upstairs.
Sometimes only the question does.
