English in Head Start? Puerto Rico’s Language Debate

A federal proposal to require English instruction in Head Start has raised questions about language, education, and cultural identity in Puerto Rico. Senate Resolution 606, promoted by Senate President Tomás Rivera Schatz, calls for training educators to teach in English. What would this mean for Spanish-speaking children, their families, and their teachers?

Join Edwin Ortiz on Puerto Rico Open Your Eyes as he examines the proposal, the local government’s response, and the concerns surrounding statehood and assimilation. The conversation connects today’s debate with the Americanization policies introduced after 1898, distinguishing government records from the memories passed down through Puerto Rican families.

Edwin also shares his cousin Wilson’s experience: arriving in the United States for the first time at sixteen, completing high school while learning English, and facing bullying and difficulties during that transition.

Should Spanish remain the foundation of early education while children learn English? What stories about language and schooling were passed down in your family? Leave your thoughts in the comments and share this episode.
