Cardano Gets Programmable Tokens: Why CIP-113 Matters
Published 16ย hours ago
Description
CIP-113 has been merged into the Cardano CIPs repository, moving Cardano closer to a standard for programmable token-like assets.
In this video I break down what programmable tokens are, why they matter for real-world assets, stablecoins and tokenized securities, and how projects could use transfer rules, KYC allowlists, freeze/seize actions and issuer controls without turning every implementation into a custom one-off.
This does not mean every wallet and dApp supports CIP-113 today. It means the proposed standard has taken a major step forward, and now builders, wallets, custodians and projects can start aligning around the same model.
Chapters:
0:00 CIP-113 and why it matters
1:04 What has actually merged
1:44 How Cardano native tokens work today
3:13 Programmable token rules explained
3:55 Stablecoin compliance example
5:20 Real-world asset and property examples
6:01 KYC and jurisdiction controls
7:16 Freeze and seize trade-offs
9:03 Why Cardano needs this for RWAs
10:10 Fireblocks, standards and institutional custody
11:26 Years of contributor work behind CIP-113
12:27 Wrap up, Token2049 and ChatSoon
What you'll learn:
- CIP-113 defines a Cardano standard for programmable token-like assets.
- Programmable tokens can require script validation before ownership changes.
- Stablecoins, tokenized securities and RWAs often need transfer restrictions, allowlists or issuer controls.
- The standard can help Cardano compete for regulated real-world asset use cases.
- Wallets, dApps and custodians benefit when projects use one shared standard instead of custom implementations.
- The merge is important, but ecosystem implementation and support are still the next step.
