Back to EpisodesThe Hebron Massacre of 1929 in 10 Minutes
Description
For centuries, Hebron was one of Judaism's four holiest cities, home to a small Jewish community living alongside its Arab neighbors. But in August 1929, amid rising tensions over access to the Western Wall and the future of Mandatory Palestine, that centuries-old coexistence came to a tragic end. An Arab mob attacked the city's Jewish residents, murdering 67 Jews, wounding many others, and forcing the surviving community to flee after nearly 700 years of continuous Jewish presence. In this episode, we'll examine the causes of the Hebron Massacre of 1929, what happened during those horrific days, the courageous Arabs who risked their lives to save Jewish neighbors, and how the massacre transformed Jewish-Arab relations and influenced the course of Zionist history.
