The Antichrist Wasn’t Always One Man | The History They Never Tell You | Part 3

Published 1 week, 2 days ago
Description
The Antichrist wasn’t always understood as one man. So how did Scripture, church history, Bible prophecy, and centuries of interpretation become the Antichrist story Christians recognize today? In Part 3 of our complete textual history of the Antichrist, we trace the development of the figure from the early church through the Middle Ages. We begin around AD 950, when Queen Gerberga of the West Franks asked the monk Adso for information about the Antichrist. His answer became one of the most influential Antichrist texts of medieval Christianity. But Adso inherited a tradition that had been developing for centuries. We examine: • Irenaeus and the joining of Daniel’s Little Horn, Paul’s Man of Lawlessness, John’s Antichrist language, and Revelation’s Beast • The origin of the belief that the Antichrist comes from the tribe of Dan • The rebuilt Jerusalem Temple tradition • Irenaeus and the mystery of 666 • Hippolytus and the idea of the Antichrist as a counterfeit Christ • Tertullian and the Roman Empire as the “restrainer” • Nero Redivivus and the belief that Nero would return • Lactantius, Cyril of Jerusalem, Jerome, and Augustine • Pseudo-Methodius and the Last Roman Emperor • The medieval development of the Antichrist's birthplace and biography • Adso’s complete life of the Antichrist • Why a Frankish queen wanted to know when the Antichrist would appear The central question is simple: What does Scripture actually say about the Antichrist—and what came later through interpretation? John speaks of multiple “antichrists.” Paul describes the Man of Lawlessness. Revelation presents the Beast. Over centuries, Christian writers began reading these passages together until they became the biography of a single final enemy. Some of those connections may be legitimate biblical interpretation. Others are historical inferences that eventually became difficult to distinguish from the biblical text itself. This series is about separating the text from the tradition without dismissing either one. PART 3 — THE COMPLETE TEXTUAL EVOLUTION OF THE ANTICHRIST
