Description

Description:

Late in the nineties, Dov Baron walked on stage in Vancouver before a few hundred strangers who had, it seemed, already made up their minds about him. Fifteen minutes in, with nothing landing, he stopped, walked to the edge of the stage, sat down, and told them the truth: he was there to serve, and he was clearly missing something. Within a couple of minutes, the whole room leaned in. For years he called that moment close to magic.

It wasn't magic. And that, it turns out, is the better story, because it can now be measured.

This is Part One of a two-parter, and it stays deliberately on solid, peer-reviewed ground.
The claim is simple and startling: the field between us is real, and it shows up in the lab. For a century, brain science studied one lonely brain at a time; second-person neuroscience finally wired up two people at once, and a hidden world opened. Storytellers' and listeners' brains couple when communication works and uncouple the instant it fails. Mothers' and babies' brainwaves fall into sync on eye contact, though the researchers are careful to say this is not telepathy; it runs on ordinary signals. Even two pendulum clocks on the same wall drift into a shared rhythm. It is called sympathetic resonance, and it is everywhere.

Dov also handles the most over-hyped idea in the field, mirror neurons, honestly: the finding is real, the cathedral built on top of it is shaky. And he leaves you with something you can feel tonight, a coherent bodily state you can tune with slow breathing at around six breaths a minute.

Then, one night in 1914, the whole thing scaled up to thousands.

The state you carry is the state you bring into every room. This is the ground. Part Two walks off the edge of it.

Episode highlights:

  • The stage night that ended Dov's keynote "presentations" for good
  • The 2010 study showing two brains couple, and uncouple the instant communication fails
  • Why mother and baby brainwaves sync on eye contact, and why the researchers insist it is not telepathy
  • The pop-neuroscience darling that serious scientists spent years walking back
  • The one coherence state you can tune tonight, at about six breaths a minute
