FIELD NOTE #051 Every Deadline Is A Theory
Description
The Business Behind the Deadline
A deadline is a prediction.
It is made before the work is fully understood.
- Then the work begins testing it.
- A requirement changes.
- A dependency behaves differently.
- The effort turns out to be larger.
- The date moves.
- The usual post-mortem asks why.
---
This episode asks a different question: "What did we learn about the work that we did not know when we set the deadline?"
The question becomes more consequential when viewed through the nature of a business itself.
---
A business is a repeatable process for creating and delivering value that people want or need, at a price they will pay, in a way that satisfies their needs and expectations, while leaving enough profit for the business to continue.
So the important lesson from a missed deadline is not always “estimate better.”
Sometimes it is: "understand the assumptions behind the prediction better."
---
This episode explores Deadline Theory — the original prediction about work that had not yet been examined — and the habit of studying the failure without studying the theory that produced
---
Before the next deadline: "What has to be true for this date to be right?"
After the work: "What did reality teach us?"
The date was set before the work was understood.
The post-mortem studied the failure.
Nobody studied the theory.
Field Note #051.
