Lab-grown blood production set for major breakthrough
Published 1 week ago
Description
The University of Queensland and Lifeblood have launched a four-year research collaboration to upscale production of lab-grown red blood cells. Scientists can currently grow fully functional red blood cells from stem cells extracted from waste blood products, but the process takes three weeks and requires expensive growth media. The project aims to improve manufacturing efficiency and achieve large-scale production, with clinical trials potentially beginning within four to five years.
