Field Note #050 | Silence In A Meeting Is Not Absence Of Opinion
Description
The Silence Tax
------
Some meetings end with agreement.
Others end with something that looks like agreement.
The difference often becomes visible later, when the strongest objection emerges in a private message, a side conversation, or halfway through implementation.
------
This episode examines what happens between those two moments.
Before people speak, they make a calculation.
~ Will I be heard?
~ Will I be interrupted?
~ Will this change anything?
~ What did the room teach me the last time I disagreed?
When that calculation repeatedly makes silence the more rational option, the organisation begins paying a hidden cost.
------
Silence Tax.
The cost of useful information that existed inside the room but did not survive the meeting.
------
This is not an argument that every quiet person secretly has the answer.
It is an argument against treating silence as reliable evidence of agreement.
------
The episode also explores a practical shift:
Instead of asking, “Does anyone have anything to add?”
ask: "What is the strongest objection we have not heard yet?"
The goal is not more talking.
It is better access to the thinking already present.
Field Note #050.
