On Episode #14 of the Retro Wrestling Re-View ECW Podcast, Gene Jackson and Brandon Wheeler roll into July 6, 1993, and Eastern Championship Wrestling keeps inching closer to becoming the promotion fans will eventually recognize. It’s still rough around the edges, the continuity is all over the place, and some of the wrestling is a long way from great but the personalities are getting stronger, the stories are getting louder, and ECW is finally developing some momentum.

The biggest match of the night puts the ECW Tag Team Championship against the masks of the Super Destroyers as the Suicide Blondes defend against the former champions. Todd Gordon has finally had enough of Paul E. Dangerously’s chaos and threatens fines and suspensions, while Hunter Q. Robbins III insists the Suicide Blondes are the most popular team in the company only for the “fans” he brings out to immediately say they love the Super Destroyers. (which were actually just two little girls backstage at an ECW show, which is NEVER a good idea)

Regardless, somehow, the Super Destroyers have gone from masked monsters to babyfaces.

Only in early ECW.

Elsewhere, Ivan Koloff battles The Sandman, with Vladimir Koloff getting some microphone time beforehand. Neither the promo or the match itself would set the world on fire, but it will probably make you want to set fire to your television. (or wherever you watch these things)

During the Sandman segment, Rockin’ Rebel throws some sort of green substance from a cup into Peaches’ eyes, leaving her unable to see and eventually sending her for medical attention, the guys can only speculate Kabuki or Muta left a “spit cup” laying around somewhere.

From here, the guys really start to notice what a convoluted mess the ECW footage was at this point from a timeline perspective as far as when things were taped, and when they actually aired. In one segment, Stevie Wonderful is involved in an angle on TV that finally explains how he ended up in a match that happened at Super Summer Sizzler Spectacular THREE WEEKS AGO! We won’t even go into how weird the whole Kevin Christian/Freddie Gilbert thing is on this show with him appearing as both a normal rule enforcing referee and Eddie’s “little brother” Freddie on the same episode.

Just check out the show….it’s a fun one. We promise, even if for all the wrong reasons.
