The Washington Commanders finally broke through, and they did it against the defending Super Bowl champions.
Washington beat the Seattle Seahawks 33-31 in its home opener, snapping Seattle’s 12-game winning streak and improving to 1-2. With Jayden Daniels sidelined by his elbow injury, Marcus Mariota stepped in and delivered one of Washington’s biggest performances of the young season.
On today’s Commanders Squad, Nick Ashooh, former Washington WR Anthony Armstrong and David Harrison break down everything that went RIGHT for the Commanders.
Marcus Mariota finished 19-of-31 for 183 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Terry McLaurin caught six passes for 77 yards and his first touchdown of the season, while Treylon Burks and Rachaad White also caught touchdown passes.
But the biggest change may have come from the defense.
Washington forced three Seattle turnovers, with rookie Kain Medrano delivering the biggest play of the afternoon on a 50-yard pick-six. Sonny Styles was involved in two takeaways, and the Commanders held Seattle to just 44 rushing yards. Washington turned its three takeaways into 20 points and finally showed what Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Daronte Jones have been looking for from this defense.
