Melbourne couple Jemma and Jeremy Cooper were rescued by New Zealand authorities after their 51-foot yacht struck a pod of whales and sank in the South Pacific Ocean. The collision occurred hundreds of kilometres from shore as they sailed near New Zealand, causing catastrophic damage that forced the four-person crew to abandon ship and spend several hours in a life raft before being picked up by a container ship. Despite losing their vessel at the bottom of the ocean, the experienced Brighton Yacht Club members say they plan to return to explore more of the South Pacific.
