Berlin Crumbles In Final Siege
Ian Buruma, Part Two: Buruma details the destructive final years of the war as Allied strategic bombing intensifies over Berlin. He highlights Goebbels' continued production of escapist and propagandistic films, including Münchhausen and Kolberg, alongside brutal Gestapo crackdowns following the July 1944 assassination plot. The account culminates in the Soviet siege of Berlin, widespread post-capitulation violence, and the narrow, miraculous survival of Buruma's father Leo, framing wartime existence around the imperative to stay alive amidst total ruin.
