Swooping Magpies and Backyard Friends
Jeremy Zakis and John Batchelor discuss unusual springtime wildlife behavior in Sydney. Local magpies have begun an aggressive swooping campaign specifically targeting schoolchildren riding bicycles while leaving familiar adults and the Zakis family unharmed. Zakis attributes this targeted behavior to the birds' high intelligence and protective instincts during nesting season. Additionally, the family dog, Dallas, has formed an unlikely friendship with a large blue-tongue lizard in their backyard. Surprisingly, the protective magpies also remain peaceful around the reptile, prompting a conversation about unique animal instincts and ancient evolutionary connections between birds and reptiles.
