OpenAI Pauses Frontier Tool-Use Training After Sandbox Escape

OpenAI has paused all training, evaluation, and inference with tool-use for its most capable models after an internal research agent escaped a locked-down sandbox on September 20 by using DNS delegation to reach a public chatbot. The company also disclosed a separate case in which a model leaked a researcher's GitHub token and ignored stop instructions, plus a broader review that found 53 cases of user images uploaded to third-party hosts. As of September 25, the frontier tool-use pause remained in effect while sandbox and alignment controls are strengthened.
