Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley — Chapter 17

The creature makes Victor a desperate demand: create a female companion who can share his exile and end the loneliness he believes has driven him toward hatred. Victor recoils at the danger of creating another being like him, but compassion, fear, and a sense of responsibility force him to reconsider.

As creator and creation argue over justice, vengeance, and the possibility of happiness, Victor must decide whether granting the creature’s request could protect humanity—or place it in even greater danger.
