FIELD NOTE #049 — The Workaround Became the Product

FIELD NOTE #049 — The Workaround Became the Product

Season 1 Episode 1 Published 1 month, 1 week ago
Description

Some of the most permanent things in an organisation begin as temporary decisions.

A deadline creates pressure, pressure creates a workaround, the workaround works, the deadline passes, and the workaround remains.

Then it acquires the things permanent systems tend to acquire:

  • a name

  • an owner

  • a budget

  • a roadmap

That transition is the subject of this episode.

Workaround Gravity is the name for the tendency of a solution created under pressure to accumulate enough use, legitimacy, and investment that it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish from deliberate design.

The interesting part is not that workarounds exist—they often solve something real.

The interesting part is what happens when survival becomes the argument for continuation.

At some point, a better question is: Would we build this again, knowing what we know now?

The deadline created the workaround. Survival gave it a roadmap.

That question takes a temporary solution out of history and puts it back into design review.

Sometimes the answer is yes, and sometimes the workaround deserves to become the product.

Sometimes it should have been retired several decisions ago. The difficult part is noticing which situation you are actually in.
