Somewhere underneath more than a century of dime novels, movies, exaggerated stories, and Old West mythology is a real young man. His name was Henry McCarty, although history remembers him much better as Billy the Kid. Tonight, we’re going looking for the person underneath the legend.

Our trail takes us through nineteenth-century New Mexico, dusty frontier towns, ranches, courtrooms, newspapers, and the complicated Lincoln County conflict. We’ll piece together Billy’s early years, the different names he lived under, the people who actually knew him, his encounters with the law, and how someone so young became famous across America.

A big part of the journey is figuring out what didn’t happen. Billy has been credited with exploits and an enormous body count that historical evidence doesn’t always support. Contemporary reporting, eyewitness memories, photographs, letters, and official records reveal a story considerably more complicated than the gunslinger created by popular culture.

There is some unavoidable violence in his history, but it won’t be described graphically. This is meant for winding down, so our attention stays on Billy’s personality, relationships, frontier surroundings, historical mysteries, and the strange process through which a real person slowly became an American legend.

We’ve carefully shaped the episode around surviving records and established historical scholarship, while pointing out the moments where historians simply don't have enough evidence to be certain. That distinction between fact, possibility, and folklore is part of what makes Billy’s story so interesting.
