Here’s my spoiler-free Out Of Theater Reaction and review for DreamWorks Animation’s The Forgotten Island, starring H.E.R., Liza Soberano, Dave Franco and Lea Salonga. I went in knowing very little and had an absolute blast—this movie made me laugh, made me cry more than once and left me emotionally exhausted in the best, most cathartic way. Directors Joel Crawford and Januel P. Mercado deliver a visually stunning adventure rooted in Filipino culture, mythology and folklore, with animation that blends comic-book imagery, anime influences and traditional Filipino art. H.E.R. and Liza Soberano bring so much heart to Jo and Raissa’s friendship, while Dave Franco nearly steals the movie as Raww. It’s funny, weird, heartfelt, surprisingly intense and packed with meaningful ideas about friendship, memory, change and the stories we carry with us. This is a true feast for the senses and one of DreamWorks’ most imaginative original movies in years.
