Crystals & Healing

Published 13 hours ago
Description

There have always been crystals in our practice. For a long time we didn't do much with them. Then we started to see how much energy matters in healing. Today my sister, Dr. Melinda Lawless Coker, joins me for a look at the crystals we each love, why we believe in them, and how we use them with the people we work with. We'll be upfront: what we share here is anecdotal. It comes from years of watching people do remarkable things with crystals, and from some unusual experiences of our own (I've had a crystal throw itself off a shelf).

We start with the stones most people know. Amethyst is the most requested crystal we have. Most people think of it as purple, but it also comes in pink and runs all the way to black. We use it for spiritual growth, third-eye work, and opening up to the universe. Rose quartz is the one I carry in my pocket every day. It's tied to the heart chakra. When people buy it from us, it's usually less about finding a partner and more about building self-love, which is what's missing for so many people. We also share a practical tip: rose quartz fades in direct sunlight.

Melinda shares two favorites. The first is a rough citrine heart with a groove for your thumb, like a worry stone. She connects it to creativity, manifesting, and inner child work. The second is spirit quartz, a rough, textured stone she uses for harmony, especially in groups, and for grounding. She also explains why its rough and smooth edges remind her of the people she works with. Melinda is the "feeler" of the two of us. She senses a vibration in crystals and can often tell which one someone needs. We talk about how she links that to the basic physics of atoms and motion, and why I send her ahead of me when we go crystal shopping.

Then we turn to the blue stones: kyanite, sodalite, and lapis lazuli. We connect them to the throat chakra, to finding your voice, speaking up for yourself, and setting boundaries. We've found that trauma survivors in particular often feel supported just by keeping one close.

Along the way we get into the philosophy behind our store, which we call "metaphysical before pharmaceutical." It isn't anti-medication; medication has its place. It's about looking at healing from within before reaching for a quick fix, with "do no harm" as our baseline as therapists. We close with how crystal shopping works with us: sit-down appointments instead of heavy walk-in traffic, video walkthroughs of the store on FaceTime, Zoom, or WhatsApp, and shipping anywhere in the US. No two people get the same thing.
