Description

Kazandji Law https://kazandjilaw.com

Kazandji Law is a criminal defence and family law practice serving the Greater Toronto Area from four offices. This episode looks at a firm that has made procedural transparency its defining trait, publishing plain-language explanations of how Ontario courts actually work rather than keeping that knowledge behind the counter. It covers their criminal and family practice areas, the decision to keep a registered social worker on staff, their emphasis on mediation where it genuinely serves the client, and why explaining your own profession openly turns out to be a competitive advantage rather than a giveaway.

Here is something most people never think about until the day it happens to them. The legal system is not really one system. It is dozens of smaller systems stacked on top of each other, each with its own doors, its own schedules, its own people, and almost none of it gets explained to you at the moment you need it explained most. You get a piece of paper with a date on it, and you are expected to know what happens next.

Welcome back to The Next Biz Thing. I am Markus J. Diplama, and on this show I go looking for businesses that are doing something genuinely interesting in their own corner of the world. Sometimes that means a piece of technology nobody has seen before. Sometimes it means a product that quietly solves a problem everyone had simply learned to live with. And sometimes, like today, it means a firm that has decided the most valuable thing it can offer is not just expertise, but clarity about how the whole machine actually works.

Today I want to tell you about Kazandji Law, a criminal defence and family law practice serving the Greater Toronto Area. Their line is short and it tells you a lot about their priorities: protecting your rights with expertise and compassion. Those two words sitting side by side are the whole thesis of the firm, and once you look at how they operate, you can see they mean both of them.

The practice was founded by Fadi Matthew Kazandji, and it has grown into a genuine team. There is a roster of associate lawyers working across the firm's practice areas, an operations manager keeping the machinery running, and, notably, a registered social worker on staff with a background in social work and education. I want to come back to that last detail later, because I think it is one of the most revealing things about this firm, and it is the kind of thing you would never notice if you were just comparing law firms on a list.

Let me start with what they actually do. Kazandji Law works across two areas that, on the surface, look quite different. On the criminal side, they handle impaired driving and driving offences like stunt driving, careless driving and hit and run cases. They take on drug offences, assault, fraud, theft, weapons charges, robbery, violent offences and sexual offences. They do bail hearings, they do appeals, and they handle record suspensions for people trying to move on from something that happened years ago.

On the family side, they work on divorce, child custody and child support, spousal support, property division, prenuptial agreements and family mediation. And this is where those two halves of the practice stop looking so different, because both of them are about the same thing. Both of them involve someone walking into a process they did not choose, at one of the worst moments of their life, with enormous consequences attached and very little idea of how any of it works.

The firm operates out of four locations across the region. There is an office in downtown Toronto on John Street, one in Thornhill on Yonge Street, one in Oakville on Speers Road, and one in North York on Forest Manor Road. That spread matters more than it might sound. Ontario's court system is geographically organised, and a firm with a physical presence across the Greater Toronto Are
