Alleigha Botner spent direct examination reading private messages with Caleb Flynn. On cross, the defense began testing the person behind those messages. Botner testified that she had conducted internet searches about unsolved murders and that her view of Caleb changed between two FBI interviews: first saying she did not believe he killed his wife, Ashley Flynn, and later saying she did believe he did. The second interview occurred after Botner retained counsel.

The defense also had Botner read messages reflecting jealousy toward Ashley, repeated ultimatums for Caleb to leave his marriage, and her own statements that she hated Ashley and wanted her gone. Botner testified that she sent substantially more messages to Caleb than he sent to her.

She also acknowledged a problem with Caleb's story about his marriage. Botner said Ashley appeared loving toward him, and she saw Caleb and Ashley going out together. She testified that Caleb may have been lying when he told her he hated Ashley.

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty to charges in Ashley Flynn's death. Prosecutors allege he killed Ashley and staged a burglary; his attorneys say investigators rushed to judgment. Botner told jurors she has never been charged in connection with Ashley's murder and that the prosecution never promised her anything.
