Juan Garrido: The Free Black African Who Came to Puerto Rico | The History We Were Never Taught

Season 2 Episode 61 Published 1 week ago
Description

What if one of the earliest documented Black Africans in Puerto Rico did not arrive as an enslaved man?

His name was Juan Garrido—an African-born Black man who lived as a free man and participated in Spanish exploration and conquest during the early 1500s.

And Puerto Rico was part of his remarkable story.

In this episode of Puerto Rico: Open Your Eyes, Edwin Ortiz examines the documented history of Juan Garrido and a chapter of the African experience in the Spanish Americas that many people have never been taught.

Garrido participated in the early Spanish conquest of Puerto Rico associated with Juan Ponce de León. Decades later, in 1538, Garrido submitted a probanza to the Spanish Crown documenting his years of service—including his participation in Puerto Rico.

This does not erase or minimize the brutal history of African slavery in Puerto Rico or throughout the Spanish Empire.

Instead, Garrido's story reveals something important: the African experience in the early Americas was more complex than the simplified narrative that every African arrived exclusively as an enslaved person.

Africans appeared in the Spanish Americas under very different circumstances. Some were enslaved. Others were free. Historical scholarship has documented Black soldiers, settlers, expeditionaries and even Black conquistadors.

Juan Garrido was one of them.

We also examine an important Puerto Rican connection: renowned Puerto Rican historian and archaeologist Ricardo E. Alegría researched Garrido and published a study devoted to his extraordinary life.

So why do so few of us know his name?

And if Juan Garrido's story survived for more than 500 years inside historical archives, how many other stories are still waiting to be rediscovered?

History isn't always completely wrong.

Sometimes...

it's incomplete.

This is Puerto Rico: Open Your Eyes.

Hosted and written by Edwin Ortiz.
