Welcome to another Film vs. Fact episode where we look at the true paranormal story and compare it with the film version. For this one, we’ll tackle one of the most famous horror films of the 1970s: The Exorcist. William Blatty’s 1971 novel of the same name was a huge success and the 1973 film would become the highest grossing R-rated film for almost 30 years until it was finally surpassed by The Matrix Reloaded in 2003. The film’s popularity is undeniable, but what about the story itself? Of course it was based on a true story, that’s why we’re here! The film is inspired by the 1949 exorcism of a thirteen-year-old Maryland boy. Did the film get anything right? You’ll have to listen to the episode to find out.
