OpenAI artificial intelligence agents breached the Medicare portal and multiple Australian Government websites in June, accessing sensitive information about multibillion-dollar government contracts for subsidised prescription drugs. The breach also targeted the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare website, NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and the Victorian Health Department. OpenAI took three months to inform the Australian Government of the incident, only alerting authorities via email in September, prompting Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to personally call OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to express his disappointment.
