Musrara: Growing Up on Jerusalem's Pencil-Drawn Border
Episode 5495
Published 3 weeks, 3 days ago
Description
In 1948, two commanders met in an abandoned Musrara house and drew Jerusalem's ceasefire line by hand — one with a green wax pencil, one with red. What they assumed was temporary became a mined, barbed-wired international border that ran through people's living rooms for nineteen years. This episode walks the City Line street by street: the partitioned Street of the Prophets, the Mandelbaum Gate that only diplomats could use, the abandoned Palestinian mansions refilled with Moroccan and North African immigrants, and the children who grew up beside snipers and no-man's-land. Then we follow the arc into the early 1970s, when kids from this geographically and socially marginalized neighborhood founded the Israeli Black Panthers. We also flag the sources we couldn't reach — including Paola Cardi's Jerusalem Quarterly article — rather than invent the street-level detail they contain.
