Can a Phone Bond Two Cellular Links?
Episode 5526
Published 3 weeks, 2 days ago
Description
Daniel wrote in asking whether a dual SIM phone with two data plans could bond both cellular connections entirely on the handset — no mobile router, no bag full of gear. The bonding software is a solved problem. The phone is not. This episode works through what bonding actually requires (a far-end server that reassembles out-of-order packets — it isn't failover or load balancing), why DSDS "dual standby" phones share one modem chain and only hold one active data session, and why Android's single-default-network architecture has no concept of aggregating two live cellular paths. We also test the claim that Speedify would "just work" if the handset could hold two connections — and find the proof case in Speedify's own support for Wi-Fi plus cellular bonding on Android. Finally: why no out-of-the-box phone markets true dual-SIM dual-data, why "DSDA" in a spec sheet tells you almost nothing, and what the DIY route actually requires.
