Description
The plagues have brought Egypt to the edge of collapse, but one final judgment remains. Before the death of the firstborn and the institution of Passover, Exodus 11 pauses to show just how dramatically the story has changed. The Israelites who entered slavery are preparing to leave with Egypt’s silver and gold, the Egyptians now look favorably upon Moses and his people, and the man who once feared standing before Pharaoh leaves his presence in anger. Pharaoh began this confrontation asking, “Who is the LORD?” Now Egypt is about to receive its final answer.
In this episode, we explore why Israel leaves Egypt with its wealth and how this strange “plundering” connects back to Abraham, Israel’s years of slavery, and even the materials that will eventually construct the Tabernacle. We also examine the unusual statement that “the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt,” what it may reveal about the composition and preservation of the Torah, and why acknowledging scribes, editors, textual variants, and the difficulties of translation does not require abandoning the inspiration or authority of Scripture.
We then turn to the final warning itself. From Pharaoh’s first attack against Israel’s children to the coming death of Egypt’s firstborn, the story begins to close the circle opened at the beginning of Exodus. Israel once cried out beneath Egyptian oppression; soon a great cry will rise from Egypt. We trace the themes of firstborn sons, headship, judgment, and deliverance while looking ahead to Passover and ultimately to Christ—the Firstborn and Passover Lamb who is also presented in Scripture as the divine deliverer and judge.
