Non-Drug Alternatives for the Treatment of Asthma & Allergies | Dr. Brad Wolf

Season 2 Episode 134 Published 1 month, 1 week ago
Description

What if managing asthma and allergies could involve looking beyond symptoms to explore the broader environment in which those symptoms occur?

In this episode of Rooted & Wild, I’m joined again by Dr. Brad Wolf for a conversation about non-drug and complementary approaches that may support people living with asthma, allergies, and respiratory sensitivities.

For Brad, this subject is also personal. His own childhood experiences with asthma, allergies, and recurring illnessbecame part of what eventually led him to explore health beyond a strictly conventional model. Over the years, that curiosity took him into chiropractic care as well as practices including Tai Chi, yoga, meditation, acupuncture, herbalism, Ayurveda, and massage.

Together, we explore asthma and allergies through a wider lens—considering not only respiratory symptoms themselves, but the many factors that can influence how the body responds to its environment.

We talk about environmental triggers, indoor air quality, nutrition, stress, breathing patterns, inflammation, movement, and lifestyle, along with the ways complementary approaches may fit alongside appropriate conventional medical care.

Brad also shares his perspective on the relationship between the nervous system and respiratory function, and why supporting the body as an interconnected system can sometimes change the questions we ask about chronic symptoms.

Rather than simply asking, “How do we stop this symptom?” we explore another question:

“What might be contributing to the conditions in which this symptom keeps appearing?”

We also discuss the important distinction between supporting overall health and treating an acute asthma attack. Asthma can become a medical emergency, and complementary approaches should not be viewed as substitutes for prescribed rescue medication or appropriate medical treatment.

In this episode, we explore:

• Brad’s childhood experiences with asthma and allergies
• Why those experiences influenced his approach to health
• Conventional treatment and complementary approaches
• Environmental and household allergy triggers
• Indoor air quality and respiratory health
• Nutrition and lifestyle factors
• Stress and the nervous system
• Breathing patterns and respiratory function
• Movement and physical wellbeing
• Inflammation and the body’s response to its environment
• Chiropractic care and whole-body health
• Tai Chi, yoga, meditation, acupuncture, herbs, Ayurveda, and massage
• Why individualized care matters
• The difference between symptom management and exploring contributing factors
• How complementary care may exist alongside conventional medicine
• Knowing when respiratory symptoms require immediate medical attention

About Dr. Brad Wolf

Dr. Brad Wolf has been practicing chiropractic care since 1997. His interest in health began much earlier through his own childhood struggles with asthma, allergies, and illness. Those experiences led him to investigate a wide range of approaches to wellbeing and ultimately to pursue chiropractic medicine, graduating from Logan College of Chiropractic in 1996.

His work reflects a broader interest in how the spine, nervous system, movement, lifestyle, and other aspects of health interact. Together with his wife, a functional medicine doctor and chiropractor, Brad continues to explore approaches designed to help people better understand and support their health.

This conversation isn't about rejecting medication or conventional medicine. It's about expanding the conversation around asthma and allergies and asking where environment, lifestyle, nervous-system regulation, and complementary caremay have a role.

Because sometimes exploring another way of supporting the body begins with becoming curious about ever
